Circa 1887(1st Building)

YORK Township

~~Lincoln school~~

Clark County, Wisconsin

The Lincoln School building was one of the first frame school houses in the Town of York.  It was built about 1886 or 1887 on the corner where Highway County Trunk K is crossed by Highway County Trunk H.  Up until this time the only school in York was a log building located on the corner where County Trunk C junctions with County Trunk K about 1/2 mile west of York Center.  Lincoln School was originally called "The Palmer School" and the first teacher was Ella Livingston who later married Bert Lindsley.  They joined "The Crusaders" and moved to Michigan.  Other teachers included Belle Benedict Smith and Will Benedict.

In those days there was little heat in the schoolhouse overnight and Will (Benedict) told how he used to carry the bottles on ink home each night and returned them in the morning to prevent them from freezing and bursting.  The water for school was carried in a large pail from a spring about twenty rods west on what is now County Trunk H, and all the pupils drank from the same tin cup, dipping it in this same large pail.

The new school house was built in 1917 and still stands at this same location, but the District No. 1 community is now part of the Loyal School System.

When Mr. Castner came to teach in Lincoln School he brought along a large Black Snake (a type of whip) and hung it over the blackboard, "just in case he needed it."  One boy remarked, "I suppose he will use it on all of us on the last day of school."

These are some of the teachers who taught in Lincoln School down through the  years:  Nellie Allen, Hattie Warner, Belle McKenzie, Mr. Hallock, Albion Snyder, Claude Mills, Maude Alger, Mamie Rondorf, Albert Castner, Hope Snyder, Theonette Skar, Jean Davis, Ora Davis, Miss Schwantes, Eva Gretzner, Lily Reich, Mildred Mok, Loree Mathwig, Nina Drescher, Emma O'Reilly, Louise Korth, Fern Horn, Bertha Holt, Irene Drescher, Mae McGonigal, Dorothy Spangler, Florence Bertz, Gwen Pigott.  In 1900 - Will Benedict was the teacher, Dane Rogers, Clerk, Bryon Bassett, Director, and Joseph Rondorf, Treasurer.
