Col. Chales R. Gill GAR Post 236--Loyal, WI

Established August 5, 1887

Disbanded 1911

Charter Members:  J. H. Welch was the first commander.

Veterans of Loyal in Clark County formed a G.A.R. Post in 1887 and named it for the commander of the Twenty-ninth Wisconsin, Charles R. Gill.

Gill Post 236 was active for several decades, but relinquished its charter in 1911 while there were still nearly a dozen men on the roster.  Presumably many of them affiliated with other posts.

The man for whom the post was named, colonel Charles R. Gill, headed the Twenty-ninth of the western armies.  Gill was involved in the siege of Vicksburg but resigned his commission because of poor health.  He returned to Wisconsin and was elected state attorney general in 1865.

My GGF was a civil war veteran. However, he moved to Loyal about 1900 - died in 1930. I don't know if this information is useful to you or not. His name was Carl Pieper, born 6 April 1846 and died 11 Jul 1930.
