Summer events raise funds for The Highground

By Peter Spicer

The Highground Hero’s Tribute Ride and 25th annual Bicycle Tour raised over $70,000 for The Highground.

The Tribute Ride, held July 31 through Aug. 9, raised approximately $31,000, said Highground Volunteer General manager Kirk Rodman.  The funds will be used to add a Persian Gulf Tribute to The Highground, said Rodman.

Military veteran Tom Kingsbury traveled 1,500 miles during the 10-day ride commemorating Tom Miller’s 1,244-mile ride to honor his friend, Jack Swender, in 1985 and to raise awareness of Vietnam and Persian Gulf veterans.

Rodman hoped to raise $1,000 for The Highground at each of Kingsbury’s 30 stops, which was accomplished.

The 25th annual Bicycle Tour raised approximately $42,000 for The Highground’s general fund, said Rodman.  Bicyclists started from six different locations Aug. 6 and converged at The Highground Aug. 9.

Funds raised for The Highground during the ninth annual Ride to Remember Motorcycle Rally, held Aug. 15, will soon be totaled, said Rodman.
