Counties to be honored at

The Highground Veterans Memorial Park

Engraved in Stone! Saturday, April 26, at 1:30 p.m., the stones of seven counties will be dedicated on the Wisconsin Counties United in Service (UIS) Tribute at The Highground Veterans Memorial Park near Neillsville.  Residents of Sawyer, Columbia, Oconto, Forest, Iron, Menominee and Washburn counties are invited to join in the ceremony and will find their county being placed in granite on the tribute.  UIS stones honor each county and its residents for recognizing and supporting their veterans.

Of Wisconsin?s 72 counties, only three remain unrepresented after this year?s dedication.

The ceremony will begin with the ringing of the Liberty Bell and the presentation of colors.  The ?Pledge of Allegiance? and the ?Star Spangled Banner? will be led by volunteers.  Representatives from each county will be recognized and asked to say a few words. Everyone will be invited to participate in The Highground?s Talking Circle where Wisconsin?s soldiers killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan will be honored.

Individuals and organizations taking an interest in this project include housewives, teachers, motorcycle clubs, veterans, civic organizations and anonymous donors.  They will be recognized in the ceremony, and members and visitors are welcome to take part in the program.

Counties yet to have their names engraved on the tribute include Bayfield, Florence and Lafayette.  The 140-acre veterans? memorial park has nine veterans? tributes and four miles of waking trails. The park is located three miles west of Neillsville on USH 10.
