THE EXTRAORDINARY HUMBIRD, WIS. DAM

The Humbird Dam

The extraordinary length of the dam has, on such sandy foundation, required the very best engineering and material, together with more courage than most men have; and the citizens should (as no doubt they do) feel under obligation to Mr. Schmidt for contributing so largely to the prosperity of the town. Humbird--The woman's study club of Humbird is the sponsor of a public library here which has just opened for use.  Through the efforts of the club members the jail, a building but infrequently used for many years, was obtained and it has been nicely redecorated and equipped for library purposes.

Funds for cleaning, for fuel and other necessary expenses were raised by the club by holding a number of food sales.  The first books were secured through a consignment from the Wisconsin traveling library commission.  In addition to these the number of volumes has been augmented by contribution of approximately 100 books by club members and other interested people of the town.

The project, which bids fair to be successful will fill a long felt need in this community.  The library is being opened to the public two days each week with two members of the club serving in the capacity of librarians.
