The smokestack of the Redville Box Factory can be seen in the background on the horizon of the far left-side of this picture and gives perspective to the immensity of the pile of sawdust it generated.  We don't know what became of these wastes in Redville, WI.  But, we do know that some communities spread them on their village streets to help keep the mud down.  Others, such as Thorp, dumped them into swampy land to build it up.  The village cemetery of Thorp actually lays atop decomposed sawdust which has resulted in some tombstones sinking 6-7 inches over the years.
