Greenwood High School (Alumni - 1983)

Dr. Olson Honored at the 43rd annual reunion banquet that was held on May 28 in the high school gymnasium with 182 attending. The honored was John P. Olson, M.D., of the Class of 1948.

Dr. Olson graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Carlton College in Northfield, Minnesota, and then he attended the University of Rochester Medical School. He served his residency in Galveston, Texas. He is presently a professor at the University of Rochester Medical School and serves as chief of the oncology and hematology departments at Rochester General Hospital. He is also a regional director for the Hemophilia Society.

Dr. Olson has authorized a book section on blood diseases. He is married to the former Sue Arnold; they have four children.

The distinguished alumni award was presented by Dale Jolivette of Greenwood; who was a classmate of Dr. Olson’s.

The Rev. Norbert Jolivette, Class of 1941, now of Jewell, Iowa, gave the invocation and benediction. Master of ceremonies was Gretchen Liebzeit, Class of 1983.

Entertainment for the evening was provided by the Braun 4-H Club, who offered musical selections. Kurt Humke, Class of 1983, also offered a vocal selection; he has received numerous awards for his vocal efforts

Members of the various classes were formally welcomed by John Kammerud, principal of the high school.

During a business session, the alumni agreed to start a scholarship for a graduating senior, beginning in 1984.

The honored class was the class of 1933. Introduced by Harry Liebzeit, Class of 1929, they included Herman Beyer, Eva (Kalkofen) Christie, Lois (Merkle) Hare, Walter Hohl, Clarence Liebzeit, Albert Neuenfeldt, Lucille (Schwarze) Rohde, Martin Scherr, Donald Speich and Donald Syth.

Members of the 1983 alumni reunion coordinating committee were Helen (Turnquist) Axelson, Harry Johnson, Louis Landini, Roger Standiford and Carol (Drew) Turnquist.
