COLBY - Colby High School's newspaper "Hornet Highlights," recently won the George H. Gallup Award at the recent fall meeting of the Wisconsin Chippewa Valley Student Press association.

Competition was based on last year's issue, edited by Sue Rau, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Rau, Dorchester. Assistant editors were Rick Clifford, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Clifford, Colby and Dennis Wibben, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wibben, Colby.

The award is presented by Quill and Scroll, an international journalism association, to the most outstanding high school newspapers in the nation.

Colby's newspaper also tied with LaCrosse Aquinas for second place in the general excellence category for school with more than 500 enrollment.

Individual awards include Tom Pietrowski, son of Mr., and Wibben, second in human interest photography. and Mrs. Donald Pietrowski, Colby, this year's editor, first place in news writing and sports writing; Stephanie Weix, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Weix, Colby, first place in feature writing, and honorable mention for in-depth reporting; Rau, first place for cartooning, and Wibben, second in human interest photography.

Staff members publish eight issues of "Hornet Highlights: per year. They write articles, set and develop type, design page layout, write headlines, shoot and develop photos, and proofread copy.
