Henchen, Clara M. (19 January 1891 – 27 September 1982)

Clara M. Henchen, a longtime nurse and who was voted Woman-Of-The-Year by a local civic club, passed away on Monday evening, September 27, in Neillsville Memorial Home. Henchen, 91, had been a resident of Memorial Home for the past two years.

The deceased was born on January 19, 1891, in the Town of Weston to Bruno and Amelia (Schultz) Henchen. She received her education in Weston schools and then graduated from Neillsville High School. She attended Finley Hospital’s School of Nursing in Dubuque, Iowa. Upon receiving her RN degree, she worked for Finley Hospital for 23 years.

Nurse Henchen then worked at a Warren, Ohio, hospital for five years and then moved back to Wisconsin, working at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield until 1951. She then was employed by Victory Memorial Hospital in Stanley. When Neillsville Memorial Hospital was opened, she began work there and served until 1964; then she worked at Neillsville Memorial Home. She served 52 years as a nurse. She was a member of St. John’s congregation and the Clark County Historical Society.

Surviving her is a sister, Mrs. Elsie Turenne, Thorp; a brother, Ervin Henchen, Princeton, Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Arnold, Clarence and Avel; and a sister, Frieda.

Funeral services were to be held today (Thursday, September 30) at 1:30 p.m. from St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Neillsville, with the Rev. Norman W. Lindloff officiating. Burial was to be made in the Neillsville City Cemetery. The Gesche Funeral Home of Neillsville was in charge of arrangements.
