Twenty-one volunteer firemen from Dorchester worked in shits for a 28-hour period Thursday and Friday at the Bob Rueden farm northeast of Abbotsford, fighting a silo fire, which is believed to have started by combustion.

The fire started about 24 feet from the bottom of the 60 x 20 foot concrete silo containing haylege, and Rueden estimates 170 tons burned.

Dorchester Fire Department Chief Dick Smith stated the fire call was received at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, and firemen were at the scene until 3 p.m. Friday.

Using a silage unloader and forks, fire department personnel removed about 20 feet of haylege from the silo, and friends, neighbors and relatives of the Rueden family worked in shifts to haul the feed from the area.

Rueden state the fire may have been smoldering in the silo for several days, but because of the updraft there was no smoke odor in the immediate area. Extremely high winds Thursday made climbing up and down the silo difficult for firemen.

Rueden feeds 85 head of cattle on his 200 acre farm, and stated the loss will cause him to be short of feed this winter. The Rueden farm is located three miles east of Dorchester.
