Stucki, Ella A. (15 June 1905 – 28 July 1982)

The wife of a longtime missionary to Winnebago Indians passed away in St. Joseph’ Hospital, Marshfield, on Wednesday, July 28.

Deceased is Ella A. Stucki, 77, who made her home at 1101 West Fourth St., Neillsville. She was born on June 15, 1905, in Franklin to Ferdinand and Anna (Bub) Kuester. She received her education in Greenwood and Neillsville Schools.

On June 21, 1922, she married the Rev. Benjamin Stucki. The couple worked together for 40 years as missionaries to the Winnebago Indians in the Black River Falls and Neillsville areas. That work led to the continuance of the Winnebago Indian School, which in now know locally as Sunburst Youth Homes.

In 1955, Mrs. Stucki attended school in Minneapolis for X-ray and lab technology and then worked at Neillsville Memorial Home. After her retirement, she mad clothes and quilts for charitable organizations. She was a member of the Neillsville United Church of Christ and the Clark County Historical Society.

Surviving her are four sons, Jacob of Kalamazoo, Mich., Benjamin J. of Port Angeles, Wash., William of Manchester, Mich., and David of Madison; and two daughters, Esther (Peg) Bremer of Marshfield and Mrs. Richard (Elizabeth) Stucki-Carnes of Ijamsville, Maryland. Joining them are seven sisters, Isabelle DeMert of Neillsville, Beula Landerman of Kenosha, Amanda Hemp of La Crosse, Sadie O’Brien of Eagle River and Minnie Grap and Ann Zabler, both of Milwaukee; 19 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held on Monday afternoon, August 2, from the Neillsville United Church of Christ with the Rev. Gary Clark officiating. The body was to be cremated with ashes placed at the Indian Mission Cemetery at Black River Falls. The Gesche Funeral home was in charge of the arrangements.
