Granton-State Farmer Degree (FFA - 1982)
Three Granton High School Future Farmers received their Wisconsin State Farmer
degree this Wednesday, June 9, at the FFA annual convention at Green Lake. They
are Cheryl Garbisch, Jay Parker and Tom Dix. The degree is the highest the state
association can confer.
Cheryl Garbisch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Garbisch, earned her degree
through leadership and a farming program of dairy and swine. She shows at fairs
and livestock shows and was champion swine showman at the fair last year. This
week she is singing in the state FFA chorus and next week will be participating
in the state J.D.A. demonstration contest. The following week she will be in
Washington D.C., at an FFA leadership conference as one of the top ten FFA
students in the state. She will attend UW-River Falls and major in agricultural
education. She received a $400 scholarship from Tri-State Breeders as the top
winner in a leadership contest they sponsored.
Jay Parker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Parker, Town of Grant, is receiving His
degree for project work in the field of horticulture and dairy. He has been the
organist at the state FFA convention the past four years. This week he is a
finalist in the state FFA public speaking contest. Jay excels in parliamentary
procedure activities and is a candidate for the state FFA office.
Tom Dix, son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Dix, Chili, earned his degree with a farming
program of dairy and swine. Tom was the champion showman in swine at the fair a
year ago. He has tested the home herd and planted over 500 trees. He was FFA
reporter for the Granton Chapter last year.
The three students earning the degree this year make a grand total of 73 FFA
members from the Granton Chapter who have become Wisconsin State Farmers. Many
of these are farming in the local area and a number are business leaders.
The advisor at Granton for the past 33 years has been Francis Steiner.
