Subke, Fred J. (2 March 1892 – 11 April 1982)

The former owner of a home for the elderly in Neillsville passed away on Sunday, April 11. Fred J. Subke, 90, died at the Neillsville Memorial Home.

Mr. Subke was born on March 2, 1892, in Chicago to John and Christine (Jensen) Subke. At the age of five, he moved with his parents to the Town of Levis, receiving his education in both Levis and the Neillsville Lutheran schools. He then began farming. On September 27, 1923, he married Ella O. Weeks in Neillsville ceremonies. The couple continued farming in Levis and then moved into Neillsville in 1954 where they operated Subke’s old Folks’ Home on Hewett Street.

In 1965, the Subke couple retired from the old folks’ home operation, and he then worked for a time at the Neillsville Memorial Hospital and with Green Thumb. He was a member of the United Church of Christ. He had been a resident of Neillsville Memorial Home for the past couple of months.

Surviving him is a daughter, Mrs. Martin (Dorothy) Kalina, Merrillan; three sons, John and Robert both of Neillsville, and Fred, Jr., of Mukwonago; ten grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife (March 1, 1979) , a sister and two brothers.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, April 14, from the Neillsville United Church of Christ with the Rev. Gary Clark officiating. Burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery with the Gesche Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
