The Tribune Phonograph has been selected to represent the nation’s community newspaper field in the 1975 Management of Resources survey.

The research project is the first of its kind designed especially for newspapers in the best sense of the term, according to Gerald C. Stone, Project Director at the Syracuse University Communications Research Center.

Stone said the philosophy of published the community sized newspaper emphasizes the role of the paper as a community servant, a leader in civic development and the best link between local neighbors.

Because the community newspapers is also a business, it must compete in the marketplace for enough profit to pay its employees and remain in operation as a free enterprise.

The 1975 survey is designed to evaluate the management aspects of hometown newspapers in today’s communities, many of which are urbanized or growing toward industrialization. The project’s goal is to develop guidelines to strengthen the newspaper’s economic practice, and thereby keep it a strong voice of the local community.

The study involves weekly and daily papers from every state across the country. Data from the newspaper and census figures are being compiled now, with a project completion and report date in May.

Co-sponsors of the Syracuse University study include the National Newspaper Association and Sun Chemical Corporation, a manufacturer of printing inks and supplies.
