Karow, Arthur A. (24 Nov 1907 – 20 Jun 1978)

The Township of Hixon and the Owen Withee area was saddened by the death of Arthur A. Karow, who died on Tuesday, June 20, 1978 at 7:15 p.m., following a two years long illness, at the Colonial House of Colby.

Mr. Karow, age 73, was a former supervisor on the Clark County Board, a former chairman of the Hixon Town Board, former Clerk of White School in the town of Hixon, and former Superintendent of the Owen Alliance Church Sunday School.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 24, 1978 at 1:00 p.m. at the Owen Alliance Church, with Pastor Harry Landaw officiating. Burial followed at Riverside Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Frank Olszewski, Gordon Thorson, Stanley Bartosiak, Royalle Hamel, Harold Frey, and Gene Adams.

The Maurina Funeral Home in Owen provided services, and prayer services was held in his memory by the Owen Masonic Lodge F &AM 317 on Friday evening, June 23.

Art Karow was born on November 24, 1907 in Ishpeming, Michigan, where his father was a miner. He moved to the town of Hixon with his parents in 1912, where they pioneered on a farm. Both his parents died and he was adopted by Herman Karow at the age of 12. He farmed in the Township of Hixon, and on October 25, 1934, was married to Helen Mattes in Eau Claire. They farmed until he retired in 1973.

Art Karow began serving his community, first as Clerk of the White School in the Township of Hixon, and then served on the Hixon Town Board for 36 years, and from 1956 to 1976 served as Town Chairman. In those years, a township chairman automatically became a member of the Clark County Board of Supervisors, where he served for 20 years.

He was a member of the Owen Alliance Church, where he served for 45 years as Superintendent of the Sunday School, and later Secretary of the Sunday School.

On September, 1, 1976 Mr. Karow suffered a stroke, and since a time in the hospital, has been a resident of the Colonial Nursing Home in Colby. On October 18, 1977, Mrs. Karow moved into her present home at 513 Melbinger Street, Owen.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Allan (Margaret) Hamel, Farmington, Michigan, and Mrs. Benjamin (Janet) Proctor of Eau Claire; three sisters, Mrs. Martin (Ila (?)) Shriver, of Newport, Oregon, Mrs. Edward (Ida) Wilson, San Diego, California, and Mrs. Herman (Mabel) Bushing of Berwyn, Illinois; two brothers, Eino Backa, Milwaukee, and Eno Bakke, Withee, and four grandchildren.

One brother and one sister preceded him in death.
