Payne, Walter W. (24 Nov 1886 – 23 Aug 1973)

Dr. Walter W. Payne, 86, a former veterinarian in Colby, died Thursday, August 23, 1973 at the Plymouth Extended Care facility, where he had resided the past two and one-half years.

Dr. Payne was born November 24, 1886, in the Town of Mitchell, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Steven Payne. He attended the district school and graduated from the school of Veterinary Medicine of Ohio State University on June 22, 1910. He practice veterinary medicine at Colby and received the Honorary Service Award from the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association in recognition of 50 years of meritorious service in the veterinary profession on June 16, 1961, when he retired.

He was married to Minnie Hamann in Waldo on November 2, 1914. She preceded him in death in May of 1967.

While living in Colby, Dr. Payne was very active in civic affairs, being a member of the County Board for many years, serving as an alderman and one the board of education. He was a member of the Colby Masonic Lodge No. 204 F. & A. M., a thirty-second degree Mason, and a member of the Valley of Eau Claire Consistory.

Following his retirement, the Payne’s moved to Plymouth in 1964, where he was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ.

Funeral services were held Sunday at the Wittkopp Funeral Home in Plymouth, with the Dr. D. C. Runnels officiating. Burial was made in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in the Town of Mitchell.

Survivors include a brother, Leonard Payne of Fond du Lac, and nieces and nephews. (the rest of my copy was cut off)
