Schmitz, LaVerne E. “Evie” (14 September 1934 – 17 January 2022)

Laverne E. "Evie" Schmitz, 87, of Thorp, passed away on Monday, January 17, 2022, at Turner Integrity Care in Thorp.

LaVerne Evelyn Mumper was born on September 14, 1934, in rural Fond du Lac County, the daughter of John and Dorothy (Lueck) Mumper. She was raised and educated in the area and graduated from high school in 1952. She was united in marriage to James A. Schmitz on October 30, 1954, at St. James Catholic Church in Lannon. They moved to the Thorp area in 1967 and farmed in the Town of Reseburg until retiring in 1993 when they moved to the City of Thorp. After Jim's death in 2005, Evie continued to live in her home on Wall Street until moving to Turner Integrity Care 2 years ago.

She was an avid card maker, who also enjoyed baking, gardening, canning, and reading books. But most of all, she enjoyed playing "liars rummy" with her grandchildren!

Evie was a member of St. Bernard - St. Hedwig's Catholic Church and its' Parish Council of Catholic Women, a member of the Thorp American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of the Oakland Homemakers Club.

She is survived by eight children: Kathleen Schmitz of Thorp, Mary Panchyshyn of Maple Grove, MN, Thomas Schmitz of Sheboygan, Patrick Schmitz of Howards Grove, Ann (Marvin) Haas of Thorp, John Schmitz, Karen Schmitz, and Judy (Dan) Banie all of Sheboygan; 14 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

Evie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband: Jim; her daughter: Connie Schmitz, and her brother: Harold Mumper.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Thorp Catholic School, the Thorp Food Pantry, or a charity of choice.
