Walter, Daniel Dean (21 Aug 1972 – 7 August 1980)

(Note: Birth date taken from Neillsville St. Mary’s Cemetery listing)

A farm accident on Thursday, August 7, claimed the life of Daniel D. Walter, 7, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene J. Walter, Jr.

Funeral services were held on Saturday morning at 10:00 for Daniel Dean Walter, from St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Neillsville. The Rev. Joseph Henseler officiated with burial made in the parish cemetery.

Surviving the deceased are his parents, Eugene J. and Judith A. (Dahl) Walter, Jr., one sister, Sandra, and four brothers, James, Mark, Robert, and Timothy, all at home. Also surviving are Eugene and Mildred Walter, Neillsville, paternal grandparents; Erland and Irene Dahl, Granton, maternal grandparents; and Adaline Keuer of Neillsville and Mrs. Freida Dahl of Chili.

The young Walter was fatally injured Thursday when he had finished unloading a gravity box wagon inside a shed on his grandfather’s (Eugene Walters) rural Granton farm. In an attempt to pull the wagon by hand, the boy pulled on the tongue. As the wagon went down an incline, he lost control and fell; a wagon’s wheel crossed his torso. His parents took him to Neillsville Memorial Hospital where emergency surgery was undertaken. At 2:05 p.m., young Walters died.

St. Mary’s Choir and Mrs. Glenn Short offered special music for the mass. Serving as pallbearers were Jack and Steve Friemoth and Kenneth and Eric Eibergen. The Gesche Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Attending the services from out of the area were Mr. and Mrs. James Pietrzak, Shakopee, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Sobczak, West Bend; and Mrs. Lloyd Swenson, Caledonia, Illinois.
