Martens, John J. (3 February 1895 – 10 February 1980)

A longtime area well driller, excavator and lumber mill operator, John J. Martens, 85, passed away in Neillsville Memorial Hospital on Sunday, February 10. Martens, a Grand View Park resident, rural Neillsville, had been in failing health for the past several years.

Funeral services for Martens were held Tuesday afternoon from the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville with burial made in the Town of Mentor Cemetery, rural Humbird. The Rev. Gary Clark of the Neillsville United Church of Christ officiated.

Martens was born on February 3, 1895, in Chicago to William and Louise (Buchholz) Martens. As a small boy, he moved with his parents to the Columbia area, where he received his education. He lived his entire life in the Neillsville area, working as a self-employed well driller, lumber mill operator and excavator, retiring five years ago.

On December 7, 1921, he married Frieda Henchen in Neillsville ceremonies. The Martens couple moved to the Humbird area after retirement and lived there for about two years before moving back to Neillsville.

Surviving him, besides his wife, is one son, Donald, St. Mary’s, Id.; two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Charlotte) Gress of Neillsville and Mrs. Isabelle Wilson of Milwaukee; one sister, Helanda Martens, Neillsville; ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.

Martens, John J. (3 February 1895 – 10 February 1980)

Funeral services for John F. Martens, 85, were held from the Gesche Funeral Home, Neillsville, on the afternoon of February 12. Martens has passed away February 10, in the Neillsville Memorial Hospital.

The Rev. Gary Clark of the Neillsville United Church of Christ officiated at the services, and musical accompaniment was provided by Deon Spangler on the organ. Serving as pallbearers were Steve Gress, Joel Gress, Joe Konkel, John Wilson, Jeff Willson and Jerry Wilson. Burial was made in the Town of Mentor Cemetery, Humbird.

Attending from out of town were Belle Wilson, John, Jerry and Kary Wilson, and Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Wilson, all of Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Gus Rosenbaum, Cottage Grove, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Gress and family and Joe and Becky Konkel, all of Wis. Rapids.
