Schmitz, Mr. and Mrs. George (Golden - 1980)

Celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary recently were George and Dorothy Schmitz, Rt. 1 Granton. A January 12 celebration was held at the Granton Sportsmen’s Club, hosted by family and friends.

After a noon dinner, a family history, “Pleasant Memories” was read by Pastor Ellerbusch. The history was put into verse-form by Mildred Faber, who later sang a song honoring the Schmitz couple. Other entertainment was also provided by Ross Downer and Frankie Filitz. In the evening, a mock wedding was held, featuring the Schmitz grandchildren, followed by dancing.

George, who is the chairman of the Town of Grant and serves on the Clark County Board of Supervisors is the son of Peter and Mathilda Schmitz and was born in the Granton area. Dorothy is the daughter of Gustave and Bertha Heinrich and was born in rural Marshfield. The couple had four children: LaMar of Neillsville, Ronald of Stratford, Mrs. Cyril (Betty) Tasse of Granton and Jerry of Granton, plus 16 surviving grandchildren.

The couple enjoy good health and have many hobbies. George enjoys fishing, hunting and card playing while Dorothy likes to crochet Afghans and makes quilts for her children and grandchildren. They both enjoy working in a large garden.

All of the family attended save for two grandsons, Dean Schmitz of Richmond, California, and Jim Schmitz, Stratford. Their eldest grandson, Daniel Schmitz, died in 1972.

Also attending the event were relatives and friends from Waukegan, Illinois, and from the Wisconsin communities of Milwaukee, Madison, La Crosse, Marshfield and local communities.
