Greenwood Airmen Honored by Military (1979)

The graduation of a Greenwood Air Force Sergeant from an academy and the medal earning by an Air Force officer, also from Greenwood, were announced recently by the military branch.

First Lt. Jerome P. Bucheger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Bucheger, Rt. 1 Greenwood, had been decorated with the U.S. Air Force Commendation Metal at Vance Air Force Base, Enid, Oklahoma.

The medal is awarded specifically to those individuals who demonstrate outstanding achievement or meritorious service in the performance of their duties on behalf of the Air Force.

Lt Bucheger was cited for meritorious service as a plans and scheduling chief at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. He now serves with a unit of the Air Training Command.

The lieutenant, a 1971 graduate of Greenwood High School, received a bachelor’s degree in 1975 from UW-Superior and was commissioned through the ROTC program.

Senior Master Sergeant James. N. Hefner, son of Katie Hefner, 307 Begley St., Greenwood, has graduated from the nine-week U.S. Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy at Gunter Air Force Station, Montgomery, Alabama.

Sergeant Hefner studied advance management techniques, communications skills and behavioral science. The academy is the Air Force’s highest professional military school for noncommissioned officers.

The sergeant has returned to Hill Air Force Base, Utah, where he is an aircraft maintenance superintendent with a unit of the Air Force Logistics Command.

Sergeant Hefner is a 1962 graduate of Marshfield Senior High School.
