Slota, Bernard L. (20 May 1894 – 20 Mar 1973)

Bernard Louis Slota, ag 78, resident of Gilman, passed away suddenly on Friday, March 30, 1973, around 11:00 a.m., at his home in Gilman of an apparent heart attack, while burning grass by his house.

He was born May 20, 1894 at Thorp, the son of Domonic and Anna Slota. He grew up in the Thorp area and graduated from Thorp High School in 1913.

He taught school in the Thorp area for 4 years, and then went to Duluth, Minnesota, where he was employed by the Minnesota Steel Company of Duluth.

On October 20, 1916 he was united in marriage to Victoria Moore at Duluth. In 1924 they moved to Gilman, at which time he and his brother John Purchased controlling interest of the State Bank of Gilman. In 1946 he purchased his brother’s interest and became President of the State Bank of Gilman. He was the Postmaster of Gilman from 1934 until 1942.

He served the community in many ways, acting as village president and serving on the Taylor County Board of Supervisors for many years. He was a member of the Wisconsin Bankers Association, the Clark Taylor County Bankers Bond Club, and was an honorary member of the Medford Council of the Knights of Columbus.

In 1965 he retired from banking and has lived in Gilman since. His survivors include his wife, Victoria of Gilman, one daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Staroseiec of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin; 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, and one brother, Joseph, of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Dr. Bernard R. Slota.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 3, 1973 at 10:00 a.m. at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Gilman. Father Frederick Brost officiated, with burial in Meadowbrook Cemetery in Gilman.
