Neillsville-Honoring a Fallen Worker (Opelt – 13 August 2021)

Neillsville Community members lined the streets Friday, Aug. 13, to show their respect as the funeral procession for Russell Opelt passed by. Opelt, a Neillsville native, worked for the Clark County Highway Department since 1999. He was killed in an accident in Willard Aug. 8 shortly after 1 a.m. after being called to clear the highway of a downed tree. After Opelt’s funeral at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, a procession including almost 20 highway department vehicles, police cars and family members’ vehicles made its way through downtown Neillsville. Area EMS, police and fire personnel also attended to show their support, and fire trucks displayed a large American flag above 5th Street near the gazebo. Submitted Photos
