Hoberg, U.S. Navy Ray (Service Notes- 1978)

U.S. Navy Electrician’s Mate Third Class Ray Hoberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Hoberg, formerly of Neillsville is participating in the major NATO exercises “Bold Guard ‘78” and “Northern Wedding ‘78” in northern Europe.

He is assigned to the amphibious command ship, USS Mount Whitney, homeported in Norfolk, Virginia.

The exercises, which are being conducted with 40,000 men, 170 ships and submarines and 800 aircraft, are designed to prepare for protection of Europe’s northern flank and include naval and land operations around the eastern Atlantic, North Sea and English Channel, including the Shetland Islands, southern Norway, Germany and the Jutland peninsula of Denmark.

Nations participating in the exercise include Belgium, Canada, Denmark, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Hoberg is a 1975 graduate of Neillsville High School and joined the U.S. Navy in 1975.
