Edwards, Robert L. (Scholarship - 1978)

A second Greenwood High School student learned this week that he has been named one of the 1,000 winners of National Merit Scholarships, valued at $1,000.

Named was Robert L. Edwards, 105 South Main Street, Greenwood, who will receive his award in the computer sciences area from IBM. Edwards is salutatorian, a member of the National Honor Society, served as Spanish Club president and yearbook editor; participated in Badger Boys’ State, Indianhead Honors Band, the Elk’s banquet, the all-school play, High Quiz Bowl, state drama contest, newspaper staff and the Upper Wisconsin Science Symposium. He has also been honored with awards for efforts in band and in a business contest.

Robert is the brother of Debra Edwards, who learned two weeks ago that she had been named a National Merit Scholarship winner. Both reside with their grandmother, Geneva Olson.

There are 14,000 finalists in the competition of which only 4,000 will receive awards. Over one million students, mostly high school juniors, entered the 1978 competition by taking the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test-National-Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Some 15,000 of these students, the one-half of one percent from each of he fifty states, were named semifinalists in the fall of 1977. The first of the three nationwide announcements, which include Debra Edwards, showed 1,409 winners. Robert’s group totaled 1,000 winners with still yet another 1,600 winners to be named for college sponsored four-year Merit Scholarships, to announced May 4.
