Myers, Navy Boiler Tech. Fireman Michael E. (Service Notes - 1977)

Navy Boiler Technician Fireman Michael E. Myers, son of Mrs. Marion Myers, Rt. 1 Neillsville, recently participated in Exercise “Readiex 3-77” off the Southern California coast.

He is serving as a crewmember aboard the frigate USS Meyerkord, homeported at San Diego. He was one of more than 8,800 men who took part in the five-day exercise which included 16 ships and more than 100 aircraft.

The overall commander of the exercise was Vice Admiral Samuel L. Gravely, Jr., USN, the commander of U.S. third fleet, the tactical commander at sea was Rear Admiral Paul H. Spear, the commander of carrier group one. RAdm. Spear directed the exercise from his flagship, the aircraft carrier US Constellation.

U.S. Navy and Coast Guard units joined to test and evaluate current tactical plans and provide essential training for fleet units “Readiex 3-77” stressed all phases of Naval operations including antisubmarine warfare, surface tactics, and antiair defense.

A 1974 graduate of Neillsville High School, Myers joined the Navy in August 1974.
