College Notes (Honors – Fall Semester 2019)

University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh officials have announced students who qualified for the dean’s list and honor roll in the fall of 2019 across its three campuses (Fond du Lac, Fox Cities and Oshkosh).

To qualify for the honor roll, a student must take at least 12 credits and earn a GPA of at least 3.3 (out of a possible 4.0). Those with a GPA of 3.75 or better qualify for the dean’s list.

Earning a spot on the dean’s list were Jill Richmond of Granton and Abigail Kirchner of Greenwood. Students who made the honor roll include Bailey Krause of Dorchester, Trisha Naedler of Granton and Alexis Dietsch, Lane Meyer, and Ryleigh Wilke, all of Loyal.

Several area students were part of the more than 1,770 students to receive degrees from UW-Madison during the winter commencement ceremony in December.

From Dorchester, Haylee Geiger graduated from the School of Human Ecology with a bachelor of science in human development and family studies.

From Loyal, McKenzie Rowley graduated from the School of Education with a master of science in occupational therapy.

From Owen, Malinda Miller graduated from the School of Education with a bachelor of science in art.

During the commencement ceremony, Chancellor Rebecca Blank told graduates she was following closely the national debate over whether a college degree is worth the cost. As an economist who has spent much of her life studying the U.S. labor market, she said she found the question mystifying.

“Simply put, you have just made the best investment you will ever make,” she said, to applause. “The monetary returns on a college degree are higher now than they have been in the past 50 years. College graduates earn far more than non-college graduates. It’s clear that university training gives you skills that this global economy values more and more each day.”

Keynote speaker Jason Gay, the sports columnist for the Wall Street Journal and a 1992 UW-Madison graduate in political science, stressed the messiness of life. Embrace the uncertainty, he said.

“My friends, you’re about to step out into this beautiful chaos,” he told graduates.

Student speaker Lisa Kamal, a highly accomplished geology major, told the graduates that their everyday human experiences give weight and substance to the diplomas they are about to receive.

“Every sacrifice, every bit of energy you dragged out of you every morning – even if all you managed to do was scratch the bare minimum. You are graduating today. You did enough and I am proud of you. I am immensely proud of you.”
