Walter, Anthony "Tony" L. (21 March 1939-26 January 2000)

LOYAL--A 60-year-old man was killed in a farming accident Wednesday in Clark County.

Anthony Walter, Loyal, suffocated when animal bedding was shoveling from a haymow collapsed around him, according to a press released from the Clark County Sheriff's Department.

Walter, who was working at the Jim Dux farm two miles west of Loyal, was discovered missing after he failed to return from his chores. He was found several feet of chopped straw.

Walter was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield, where he was pronounced dead of asphyxiation due to suffocation.

LOYAL--Anthony "Tony" L. Walter, Jr., 60, Loyal, died January 26, 2000, as the result of a farm accident.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Loyal. The Very Rev. Roman Kaiser will officiate.

Burial will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bill Horn, John Walter, Allan Walter, Anthony Walter, Jim Schecklman and Joseph Walter Jr.

Visitation will be Friday at the Cuddie Funeral Home in Loyal.

Anthony L. Walter Jr. was born on March 21, 1939, on the home farm south of Loyal to Anthony Sr. and Beatrice (nee Buddinger) Walter. Tony was raised on the family farm and educated at Pleasant View Country School for six years. He then attended St. Anthony's Parochial School and graduated from Loyal High School in 1957. In 1959 Tony joined the National Guards and served for a time at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, Fort Ord in California and Fort Lewis in Washington. On May 9, 1964, he was united in marriage to Alice Zopfi at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. On June 30, 1964, Tony was honorably discharged from the service. He then returned to Wisconsin and farmed south of Loyal all of his life, retiring in 1996. At this time he and wife moved into Loyal and he worked on Jim Dux's farm.

Tony loved spending time with his family and also enjoyed dancing, football and car racing. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, serving on its parish council and was a member of the American Legion Post 175 in Loyal.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Walter of Loyal; one son, James (Karin) Walter of Waterford; three daughters, Carol (Bill) Hoffman of Marshfield, Juliann (Dan) Hoffman of Dekalb, Illinois and Karen Walter and her fiance Derek Schultz of Mount Horeb; two grandsons, Kevin and Kyle Hoffman; one granddaughter, Nicole Walter; one brother, Joseph Sr. (Kathy) Walter of Loyal; one sister, Kathy (Delmane) Schellenbach of Christie; and one aunt, Ann Alter of Loyal.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Janice Walter.
