Florence E. Doyle (24 Sep 1914 – 27 Jul 2008)

Florence E. Doyle, 93, Medford, died Sunday, July 27 at Memorial Nursing Home in Medford, where she had resided the past five months. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 30 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford, with Father Gerard Willger and Deacon Joe Stefancin officiating. Interment was at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Medford. Pallbearers were Jason Apfelbeck, Du Wayne Deering, Tim Connelly and Chris, Landon and Jerry Doyle.

The former Florence Hayward was born September 24, 1914 in Des Moines, Iowa, to the late Robert W. and Ruth (Taylor) Hayward. She attended elementary school, high school and Augustana College in Sioux Falls, Iowa, the Chicago Art Institute and graduated from Mundelein College in Chicago, Ill. in 1938. She taught art at Cathedral High in Sioux Falls for two years, then in 1940 worked as a professional Girl Scout trainer in New York.

On November 6, 1943 in Yakima, Wash., she married Peter Doyle, who preceded her in death on January 23, 1999. She worked as an executive secretary in Chicago and Salt Lake City, Utah. Following World War II, they settled in Medford where she taught at Taylor County Teacher’s College for 15 years, then at Medford Elementary School for 25 years until 1976. She also taught as a volunteer for seven additional years at Holy Rosary School in Medford.

She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Retired Teachers Association and Medford VFW Auxiliary. Throughout her life she did volunteer work including a Girl Scout camp director, most recently taught aerobics at Our House Assisted Living and helped with activities at Memorial Nursing Home. She enjoyed painting, rose mauling and ceramic pottery.

Survivors include a son, Michael “Doc” (Sharon) of Medford; a daughter-in-law, Charlene Doyle of Medford; a brother, Robert (Louise) of Maryland; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
