Schmidt, Matilda M. (8 SEP 1899 – SEP 1972)

Mrs. Matilda M. Schmidt, 72, formerly of 1402 N. 28th Street, Sheboygan, died at Morningside Nursing Home, where she had been a resident the past year.

She was born September 8, 1899, at Thorp (Clark Co.), Wisconsin, daughter of the late William and Anna Oberle. She attended district school there, and was confirmed at St. Bernard Catholic Church at Thorp.

On November 11, 1919 she was married to Fred J. Schmidt at Thorp. Upon his retirement in 1957 they moved to Sheboygan. He died September 5, 1971.

Mrs. Schmidt was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, St. Ann Christian Mother’s Society of the parish, the Daughters of the Grand Army of the Republic, ladies auxiliary of the Thorp American Legion Post.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Arnold (Rachael) Mortenson and Mrs. Donald (Adeline) Bratz, and a son, William, all of Sheboygan; 13 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; five brothers, Marin and August, both of Thorp, Fred, Owen, Wisconsin, Leo of Gilman, Wisconsin, and Peter of Port Washington; three sisters, Mrs. Anton Hendricks, Sheboygan, Mrs. George Meske, Thorp, and Mrs. Peter Larsson, Fort Atkinson. She was preceded in death by one brother, a sister, and a great-granddaughter.

The funeral Mass was held Saturday at10:30 a.m. at St. Dominic Church, with the Reverend Cyril A. Volz, pastor, the celebrant. Burial was in Calvary.
