Irmal D. Gruny (18 Dec 1908 – 7 Jan 1998)

Irmal D Gruny, 89, Medford, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, at Memorial Hospital Long Term Care where she had resided for 11 months. Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 10, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford with Rev. Dennis Meulemans officiating.

Burial took place in the Medford Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dick Wesle, Les Hirt, Walter Seidl, Joe Meyer, Mike Schmitt, and Dennis Underwood.
Visitation and a Prayer service were held at Hemer Funeral Home in Medford.

The former Irmal D. Gowey was born December 18, 1908, in Richland, Iowa, to Glen A. and Orla (Chacey) Gowey. She received her education in Medford area schools and then moved back to Iowa, living there for two years. She later moved to Waupaca and was employed at the Veterans Home in King for one year. She returned to Medford and worked at the Medford Cooperative.

She married Henry Gruny on August 26, 1930, in Medford and they farmed in the towns of Medford, Little Black and Mayville for a period of time. They then owned and operated Hank’s Bar in Dorchester from 1946 until moving to Medford in 1951. She did food preparation from 1960 for various clubs and activities including the Medford Lions, Medford Curlers, Tee Hi Golfers, Medford Chamber of Commerce, Business and Professional Women, American Legion, and for weddings. In 1994, she moved to Friendship Manor in Medford. She enjoyed playing sheepshead and crocheting.

She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Foresters in Dorchester. She and her husband were honorary members of the Medford Lions.

Survivors include two daughters, Marleen Lindau and Elaine (Lawrence) Jacobi, both of Medford; three sisters, Doris Tomczyk and Mary (Otto) Guenther, both of Medford, and Velma (Arnold) Baum of Tucson, Ariz.; three brothers, John (Margaret) of Sauk City, Harold (Dee) of Medford and Kenneth (Nadine) Gowey of Stetsonville; four grandchildren, Sheila (Bob) Frazier of Irving, Texas, Diane Jacobi of Bromley, KY, Dean (Joan) Lindau of Hewitt, and Lori Denzine of Medford; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry on July 11, 1989; and three brothers.
