Filas, Joseph “Joe” G. (23 APR 1932 - 17 DEC 2018)
Joseph “Joe” G. Filas, 86, of Westboro, walked strong and steadily through the
gates of heaven surrounded by loving family on Dec. 17, 2018 under Interim
Hospice Care at Pine Crest Nursing Home in Merrill.
A mass of Christian burial was held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 28, 2018 at Good
Shepherd Catholic Church in Rib Lake. Visitation was held from 9 a.m. until the
time of the service at the church. Burial followed in Mount Olive Cemetery in
Westboro. Full Military Honors were performed by VFW Post No. 7817.
Joe was born on April 23, 1932 in Rib Lake, the son of the late Frank and
Veronica (Klapcinski) Filas. On Oct. 30, 1954 he married Shirley Elaine Harms in
Chicago and she preceded him in death on Oct. 10, 2006.
Joe enjoyed making others smile with his quick wit and story-telling ability. He
would reminisce about his life accomplishments and the years that he served his
country in the US Army from 1951-1954. He was honorably discharged as a
communication sergeant. While serving his country during the Korean War he was
decorated under General Douglas MacArthur with a Korean service ribbon and two
bronze service stars. Prior to retirement Joe ran a large dairy farm with his
wife in Westboro. Among his favorite things to do were hunting, fishing,
gardening and social events. Joe was an active member of the VFW of Westboro
along with the Rib Lake American Legion.
Joe is survived by his sister, Katherine (Dale) Hoffman of Merrill; brother,
Frank (Rosie) Filas of Medford; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Joe was preceded in death by his life
partner, Mary Baxley of Little Rock, Ark.; brother, James of Rib Lake; and son,
John of Westboro.
Waid Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Merrill assisted the family with
arrangements.
Special Thanks to Pine Crest Nursing Home and the Hospice and Palliative team at
Interim Healthcare for the wonderful care that they provided for Joe.
“Be still and know that I am GOD.” Psalms 46:10.
