Schreiber, James A. (1 APR 1935 - 4 FEB 2018)

James A. Schreiber, 82, of Ladysmith, died on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018, at Cornell Area Care Center with his sister, Ruth and brother-in-law, Bill at his side.

Jim was born on April 1, 1935, in Ladysmith, to Charles and Alice Schreiber. He grew up on the family farm in Ladysmith and often recounted fond memories of those times. He graduated from Ladysmith High School in 1954. He served his country in the Army in 1958-1959 and was stationed as a tank gunner in Germany. Jim also served in the Army Reserve for four years and was honorably discharged in 1963. For most of his life he had a career as a welder and then later worked at a printing company in St. Paul, Minn.

He was enthusiastic about bluegrass music and attended many bluegrass festivals. He liked antique gasoline engines, hunting and fixing cars for himself and relatives. He especially loved his Green Bay Packers and despised the Minnesota Vikings. Scrapping metal and recycling was one of his favorite things to do, and it kept him very busy.

Jim never passed up an opportunity to play horseshoes or card games with family, and he didn’t like to lose. He was an animated storyteller and had a great sense of humor.

Jim loved the Lord and attended Ladysmith Baptist Church. He enjoyed fellowshipping at church dinners over a cup of coffee and singing his favorite song, “Little is Much, When God is in it.” He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW. Jim was very patriotic and loved talking politics and current events.

Jim is survived by his sister, Ruth (Bill) Ewer of Ladysmith, and many nieces and nephews, including special nephews, Troy, Travis, and Tyler Ewer who affectionately called him “Unc.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Alice Schreiber; his sisters, Evelyn Burmeister and Esther Stankovich and his brothers, Glen, Bill and Charles Jr.

Funeral services will be held at Ladysmith Baptist Church with Pastor Dave Smith officiating, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8 with visitation at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner with military honors.

The Borton-Leiser Funeral Home in Cornell is assisting with the arrangements.
