Flood, Verna (Very Special Thanksgiving – 23 November 2017)
IT WAS A VERY SPECIAL THANKSGIVING
Verna Flood was surprised when her family and friends came to celebrate
Thanksgiving Day at Atrium Post-Acute Care (Atrium) in Black River Falls. Verna,
who celebrated her 102nd birthday in September, and her husband, Angus, would
often celebrate special occasions in their lives by sharing a bucket of Kentucky
Fried Chicken (KFC). Verna wanted to have KFC for Thanksgiving dinner this year.
Working with KFC, owned by Shane Hoyer, Atrium arranged for Verna and her family
to have KFC. KFC is closed on Thanksgiving Day, but when told of Verna’s wish,
Shane and his father, Gary, headed to the restaurant and cooked and delivered
chicken dinner to Atrium for Verna and her family. (Contributed photo)

For Verna Flood, this past Thanksgiving was a very special day. For years, Verna
and her husband would celebrate memorable events with Kentucky Fried Chicken
(KFC). So, when her family made plans to visit her at Atrium Post-Acute Care
(Atrium) in Black River Falls, where Verna is a resident receiving hospice care,
they were told hospice wanted to do a special dinner for the family.
They were told “Kathy’s Fund,” a fund established several years ago by the
family of Kathy Collins to help provide comfort to others facing end-of-life
issues, would help pay for Thanksgiving dinner for Verna and her family that
day.
According to Verna’s son Larry, KFC was always a special treat for the family
and he thought his mom would enjoy it.
A couple of days before Thanksgiving, Atrium staff contacted KFC in BRF, owned
by Shane Hoyer. “They talked to Shane and asked if there was some way for Verna
and her family to have KFC for Thanksgiving,” explained Barb Hoyer. “We are
retired now, and our son Shane owns the business. But Gary (Shane’s dad and
Barb’s husband) and Shane both went in that day and cooked enough chicken for
the family that was there.”
When they had it all cooked, Gary and Shane delivered it to Atrium. “There was
actually some left over, so they gave it to the staff,” Barb said.
“Grandma celebrated her 102nd birthday Sept. 2,” shared her granddaughter Sue
Larson. “When she heard KFC, she was all for that. It was the neatest thing, and
Grandma ate, and ate, and ate.”
Verna’s husband, Angus, passed away in 2000 just 10 days before his 90th
birthday. Angus and Verna lived the majority of their life together in Humbird.
