A large barn, its contents and a milk house were destroyed on the Robert
Friedenfels farm, 8 1/2 miles northeast of here (Owen, Clark Co., Wis.).
The blaze was discovered by a son, Randy, and the alarm sounded here at 3:20
Saturday afternoon. The area was blanketed by a storm, making it difficult for
the fire company to make the run and at the scene an end-loader and bulldozer
had to clear the driveway so the equipment could get in the yard.
Friendenfels said when the fire was first notice it had started in the southwest
corner, near the milk house. It is believed the blaze started by a wiring
problem. A strong wind fanned the structure, making it impossible to save.
Forty-two head of livestock in the barn were saved, six dairy cattle and the
rest beef cattle. Lost in the blaze were 6,000 bales of hay, 1,000 bales of
straw, a tractor, saddle, a supply of grain, barn cleaner, all of the milking
and milk house equipment, a silo de-loader and two piles of lumber outside the
building.
Friendenfels said he was unable to give an estimate of the loss, but it was
partly insured.
