Lis, Stanley Sr. (8 OCT 1926 - 22 DEC 2016)

On Dec. 22, 2016, Stanley Lis Sr. got on his horse and left to explore the wild west in the big sky. Stanley was a resident of the Wisconsin Veterans Home in Chippewa Falls. His health had been in serious decline since June 2016, when he had to leave his beloved home in Bellinger. No services are planned at this time.

Stanley was born on Oct. 8, 1926 in Lublin, one of 11 children born to Bruno and Sophie (Czerwinski) Lis. He was raised and received his education in the Lublin area. At the age of 17, he joined the US Navy and was eventually stationed in Rhode Island, working as a cook for officers. One day while off duty, at Misquammicutt Beach, he met Mary Valerie Sieczkiewicz, who was working at an Italian Grinder food stand. He was smitten. They dated off and on, but in 1945, Stanley was involved in a serious accident that led to an honorable discharge from the Navy. He returned home to Lublin to recover, but in 1946 he went back to Rhode Island to court Mary. They were married in Westerly, R.I. on April 12, 1947. Stanley tried to make a "go of it" doing factory work in R.I. but he was a country boy, and that "ranch" in Bellinger was calling him. In 1950 he moved his family back to the Lublin area.

Stanley earned his living as a livestock dealer and put on many miles buying and hauling cattle in the Thorp-Abbottsford-Willard area. Many a story was told about his adventures with his co-workers during this time. When he was not working, he enjoyed socializing with his buddies, especially at the Huron Tavern, card playing, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling and traveling to Canada and Wyoming on occasion.

As he grew older, he enjoyed riding his 4 or 6 wheeler, planting and harvesting peas, potatoes, and cucumbers, eating his breakfast of four eggs and a slice of European rye, sitting in his recliner watching Westerns, visiting with family and looking out his window to watch the traffic at the Bellinger four corners. Stanley was a member of the Abramowicz, Kacmarczyk, Cwikla American Legion Post #547 in Lublin. He also belonged to the Huron Snowgliders Club for many years.

Stanley is survived by his wife, Mary, and four children, Patricia Cimperman (Albert), Milwaukee, Stanley Stash Jr. (Mary), Thorp, David (Renee), Thorp and Michelle Sayer (Cameron), Menomonee Falls; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He is further survived by two sisters, Helen Hudak, Eau Claire and Sophie Bandur, Stanley and one brother Alois Lis, Rhinelander.

Stanley is preceded in death by one daughter, Cheryl Marie, who died on Jan. 12, 1967, and Stanley's future internment will be at her gravesite in Lublin; his parents; brothers; Frank, Eddie, Danny, Tony, Joe (an infant) and sisters, Bernice Nowak and Stella Klisiewicz.

Stanley was known to many by his nickname FOX*, that he was, "a clever and crafty person". He knew what he liked and he went for it. "Stanley, we know you're giving that horse you're riding one hell of a ride." *The Polish name “Lis” translates to “fox” in English.
