Herbert “Herb” A. Nemitz, 72, of Neillsville died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016, at HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.

Herbert August Nemitz was born Oct. 5, 1944, at the old hospital in Neillsville, the son of August and Meta (Schultz) Nemitz. Herb attended elementary school at St. John’s Lutheran School and graduated from Neillsville High School in 1962. He was united in marriage to Betty S. Radatz July 24, 1965.

Herb worked various jobs until he started working for Nelson Industries in April of 1966 and later with Cummins until his retirement in the fall of 2009. After his retirement, he spent many hours working on his daughter Michelle (Shelly) and son-in-law Sam’s farm where he plowed many acres throughout the spring and fall. When he wasn’t on a John Deere plowing, Herb loved camping with friends, fishing, mowing the lawn and watching his grandkids in their many activities. In 2012, Herb and Betty took a seven-week trip to Alaska, fulfilling a bucket list item.

Herb will be greatly missed by his wife of 51 years, Betty; children: Todd Nemitz (Darci Mahoney and her daughter, Teeghan) daughter Katarina of Neillsville; Michelle (Sam) Strobel, sons: Tanner and Cole of Arpin; Jeanine (David) Voigt, daughter Josie, son Dylan of Granton; and Julie (Jay) Nikolay and sons: Nathan and Corbin of Auburndale. He is further survived by a brother, Melvin (Sharon) Nemitz of Neillsville, Betty’s sister, Joyce (Merlin) Olson of Janesville and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lucille.

A Memorial service for Herb will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28, 2016, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Neillsville. Pastor Timothy Biebert will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016, at the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville, also from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Friday morning at St. John’s.

Honorary casketbearers will be his grandchildren: Katarina Nemitz, Tanner Strobel, Cole Strobel, Josie Voigt, Dylan Voigt, Nathan Nikolay, Corbin Nikolay and as a special honorary casket bearer, Teeghan Mahoney.
