Sylvester Champa, former Bemidji State College athlete, was awarded the James R. Koefod award by Dr. C.R. Sattgast, College President, at the college convocation Wednesday morning.

The James R. Koefod award is presented annually to the college athlete earning an award in a major sport, who received the highest grade point average for the preceding year.

It is given in honor of James R. Koefod, former Bemidji State College student and athlete, who was killed while in service, and the award is donated by the Koefod family.

The award is a plaque which is in the college trophy case and each year the winner's name is engraved on this plaque.

At BSC he majored in biological science and physical education and earned a minor in health. He came to BSC from Virginia Junior College and his home is in Greenwood (Clark Co.), Wisconsin.
