The posthumous awarding by the Republic of Vietnam of the Vietnamese military
merit medal and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm to PFC Dennis James
Zwirchitz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Delmer J. Zwirchitz, 611 Sycamore St.,
Abbotsford, took place Thursday, February 26, 1969.
The citation, decreed by the president of the Republic of Vietnam, Nyguyen Van
Thieu, reads in part: “Servicemen of courage and rare self-sacrifice, he
displayed at all times the most tactful cooperation while aiding the Armed
Forces of the Republic of Vietnam to repel the Red wave undermining South
Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
“With a ready zeal and commendable response, he fought to the end in every
mission and set a brilliant example for his fellow soldier. He died in the
performance of duty. Behind him he leaves the abiding grief of his former
comrades-in-arms, Vietnamese as well as Americans.”
The medals were presented to PFC Zwirchitz’s parents by GYSGT Grose, Marine
recruiter in Wausau.
In addition to the above awards, PFC Zwirchitz was posthumously awarded, in
August 1968, the United States’ third highest military medal, the Silver Star,
for gallantry in action, during which he met his death on March 16, 1968.
