Verhulst, Harold C. (5 MAR 1934 – 9 SEP 2015)

Harold C. Verhulst, 81, Sioux Falls, S.D., formerly of Greenwood, died on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Village. Funeral services were held at 10:30a.m. on Monday, Sept. 14, at Peace Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls.

Harold was born on March 5, 1934, in Greenwood, to Clarence and Esther Verhulst. After graduating from Greenwood High School, he attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. He then studied at Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., graduating in 1960. He was ordained as a minister with the ELCA in 1960. As an intern and pastor he served in ELCA congregations in Aberdeen, Yankton, Chamberlain/Hamil, Milbank, Sturgis, and Tea. In retirement he served as a chaplain at Avera/McKennan Hospital and volunteered with the Sioux Falls Police Dept.

On June 17, 1962, he married Jean Bjonerud of Aberdeen, S.D. Harold and Jean were blessed with two children, Thomas and Kristi. During Harold’s life he served on civic and professional organizations including, the Jaycees, Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Milbank School Board, and Lutheran Outdoors. Harold enjoyed being with his family, traveling, golfing, and participating in Bible studies.

Harold’s survivors who are grateful for sharing in his life are his wife, Jean; his son Thomas and wife Jennifer, their children, Lauren Miller (husband Bo), Marin, and Olivia; his daughter Kristi Carmody and husband Brian, their children, Megan McManus (husband Chet) and Kassie; his sister, Corrine Verhulst; a sister-in-law, Beatrice Verhulst; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gordon and Setsue Bjonerud; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Lyle (Alice) Verhulst; his brother, Kenneth Verhulst; two infant children; his-in-laws, Chester and Agnes Bjonerud; and a brother-in-law, Corwin (Nancy) Bjonerud.

Harold touched many lives during his life of ministry including many baptisms and weddings, confirmations and funerals. He was a faithful servant of God.
