Carlberg, Irene Alice (29 July 1930 - 1 September 2015)

Irene Alice Carlberg, 85, of Greenwood passed away peacefully at her home, Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015.

Irene was born July 29, 1930, in Porter County, Indiana to Phileanus and Anna Marie (Vitoux) Westbay. She graduated from Boone Grove High School in 1948. Irene married the love of her life, Richard Howard Carlberg Sept. 11, 1948, at Salem United Methodist Church, in Hebron, IN. Irene and Richard lived in the Hebron area until 1972, when they purchased and moved onto her parent’s farm in Greenwood.

Irene was an independent woman who expressed her thoughts and feelings even if others did not always agree. Irene loved to cook and shared her talents in this area whenever an opportunity arose. There was never a guest who left her home hungry. Even if they dropped by without notice, Irene would disappear into the kitchen and re-emerge with something delicious. Irene loved God and her family, was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church, had an active sense of humor and enjoyed a good party. Irene felt it was equally important to teach both her sons and daughters how to cook and sew. She served as a Cub Scout leader, youth group leader and Sunday school teacher and drove basketball teams to games. She loved to sing, play cards and dance. She worked on the farm and with developmentally disabled adults.

She will be missed by her children, Richard “Rich” (Sally) Carlberg of Loyal, Anna (Tom) Rueth of loyal, Aaron (Sue) Carlberg of Valparaiso, IN, Dorothy Roback of Greenwood and Debra (Brad) Rowe of Greenwood; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her loving sister, Nancy Seif of Greenwood; and other relatives and friends.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Richard Nov. 19, 2010; her granddaughter, Anna Marie Fleming; son-in-laws: Gordon Fleming III and Joseph Roback; her siblings, Anna Marie Stratton, Edna Evert, Polly Slingerland, Phileanus “Bud” Westbay and Mavis Westbay.

Per her wishes, a Celebration of life party will be held at the family farm, July 29-31, 2016.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Greenwood Nutrition Program through the Aging Office, 517 Court St., Room 201, Neillsville, WI 54456, or to Nancy Seif at 421 N. Crocker Ave., Greenwood, WI 54437 to help defray her medical bills.
