Wasserberger, Charles (26 APR 1889 – 1 SEP 1918)

Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Wasserberger received a telegram on Saturday announcing that their oldest son, Charles, had been killed in action in France on Sept. 1st. Charley was born and raised in Neillsville and his death cast a shadow of gloom over the hearts of his many friends here, but the fact that he died fighting for his country alleviates the pain and sorrow to a great extent. He was born in this city on April 26, 1889, and was 29 years of age. He attended school here and then took up the mercantile business as a life work. A number of years ago he and his father engaged in the general merchandise business in the Wasserberger building on 7th Street and from a small beginning the business has grown to unusual proportions, a great deal of this growth being due to the efforts of the deceased. He enlisted in the old Co. A and went to Two Harbors, Minn., with the boys, later going to Camp McArthur and from there going overseas.

Charley was a fine young man, an enterprising citizen and a highly capable merchant. He was conscientious in his dealings with all and well earned a reputation for strict integrity and honesty. He made the supreme sacrifice and his memory will long be a pleasant one in the minds of all who knew him well. He is survived by his parents and the following brothers and sisters: Henry, Leo, and Frank; Katie, Mrs. Chas. Sherman, Tillie, Leona, and Clara.
