Gabriel Zawadzki, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Zawadzki of route 1, box 111,
Withee (Clark Co., Wis.), has been named a Peace Corps Volunteer, having
completed 14 weeks of training at the Peace Corps Camp Radly in Arecibo, Puerto
Rico.
The new volunteers leave for Costa Rica on June 30, where they will work in
community development among the residents of newly colonized land in a
government land resettlement program. The volunteers will use their skills in
agriculture, home arts, literacy teaching, etc. in working with the Instituto de
Tierras y Colonizacion (Institute of Lands and Colonization) in helping to
organize and improve the new communities.
With their arrival, some 115 Peace Corps volunteers will be at work in Costa
Rica in rural and urban community development, health and education projects.
During their training in Puerto Rico the new volunteers studied Spanish, Latin
American history and culture, United States history and world affairs. They also
received special instruction in community development techniques, agriculture,
cooperatives, home arts and physical conditioning.
The new Costa Rica volunteers will join the nearly 12,000 Peace Corps volunteers
now working in 46 nations of Asia, Africa and Latin America. Despite these
numbers, many more volunteers are needed. Person interested in a two year Peace
Corps assignment should complete and submit an application and take the
non-competitive Peace Corps placement test, which is given throughout the
country the second Saturday of each month. Applications and additional
information can be obtained at post offices or by writing the Peace Corps,
Washington, D.C., 20525.
