Neillsville-Artist Teaches Class at CART (2023)

By Jane Thompson

Local folks visited the Clark Cultural Art Center (CART) in Neillsville Nov. 18 for a splash of pre-Christmas creativity.

CART hosted arts and crafts workshops for students of any age. One of those workshops was Paint & Sip with Shawn Ganther, a local artist. Students could choose between drinking wine or coffee and painting a Grinch or gnome.

Before Ganther brought out the canvases, paints and brushes, he helped each student trace the Grinch or gnome onto their canvas from an image projected from an overhead projector. Ganther admitted some artists have a problem with proportions. Tracing the sketch of the Grinch or gnome onto the canvas helped students know where to apply the acrylic paints.

Students JoAnn Voss, of Neillsville, and her granddaughter, Ryan Bohan of Boston, MA, have each participated in a previous Paint & Sip art session. Bohan attended one in Chicago. Voss was the first student Ganther assisted with sketching the Gnome on her canvas.

“You draw it, and we fill it in,” Voss said. “I’ve done this once before. The best part is the drying stage.” June Thompson/Clark County Press photos

Ganther encouraged each student.

“Plop paint on your canvas and blend the colors with your brush,” Ganther said.

He had already painted a Grinch and gnome, displaying them for the students to view. They used Liquitex Basics acrylic paints.

Ganther’s students painted the background of their canvas first.

“Blend the colors on the canvas until you get a desirable background,” said Ganther.

After the background was painted, students used a hair dryer to dry the canvas before they proceeded with painting. When finished, Ganther suggested the students write someone’s name on the Grinch bulb as a present.

Ganther has been involved with CART since its inception in 2016.

“I helped set up CART,” Ganther said. “I’ve been teaching since we opened in 2017.”

Ganther has had art exhibitions at CART. He has been painting since 2012.

Ganther is a graduate of the UW-Stevens Point with a degree in media production and studio art. He is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He has a permanent exhibit at the National Veterans Art Museum.

The Loyal American Legion hosted a joint craft and bake sale with the Children’s Christmas Shop Dec. 2.

Junitta Nikolai and her sister, Elizabeth, worked with Tractors for Autism and Disabilities to host the Children’s Christmas Shop inside the Loyal American Legion. The shop is designed for kids to buy Christmas decorations and presents for their families at a price they can afford.

“Everything here was donated by community members,” said Junitta Nikolai. “Each table is marked below a dollar, so we’ve got $0.25, $0.50—we’re also working with a large group of students, the [Loyal] Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, is here wrapping presents, the people from Tractors for Autism are helping out and we’ve got the [Loyal] royalty today.”

Several community churches came to sell items like Christmas decorations and desserts. St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Trinity Lutheran Church and the Loyal United Methodist Church collected under the Legion’s roof. Elizabeth Nikolai and Tami Cook were the coordinators of the event and contributed some of their own crafts for community members to admire.

“The United Methodist Church needed more space,” said Cook. “We’ve been doing this— how long—20 plus years? It’s a long time. [The churches] came together after COVID since we needed more space for our sales. The money from the booths also goes to the Legion, so it’s supporting them as well. We have some wonderful crafters; everyone’s really talented in Clark County.”

There were over 20 vendors and booths in the Loyal American Legion. Many of the vendors sold Christmas decorations and treats. By noon, the majority of baked goods and sweets were sold out.
Jenae Weyer attended the sale to sell her beauty products such as glue-on nails, earrings, blush and other makeup kits. She works at the Loyal School District and for Red Aspen as a marketer, and is on the Loyal Common Council. She also sold sweatshirts with her own designs on them.

Paulette Strey attended with her family, Liz and Brook Strey. Paulette is a junkyard artist who salvages and collects pieces of wood, metal and scrap, and creates something new with them. She paints, sews, knits, crochets and makes a variety of crafts. The family helped with managing money and chatting up passersby.

The Loyal Family, Career and Community Leaders of America volunteered at the Children’s Christmas Shop to wrap gifs for the children. Junitta Nikolai, who ran the shop with her sister, Elizabeth, also received volunteers from Tractors for Autism and Disabilities.

The Loyal community came together to share in the bounty, and the sale was a success for everyone involved.

By Nancy Curtin

“We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future”—Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The Neillsville Optimist Club (NOC) was founded in 1990 and serves the youth and citizens of Neillsville. The NOC held their annual Youth Appreciation Banquet Nov. 15 with an award ceremony and potluck dinner.

Following the potluck portion of the evening, Judy Morrow, club president, opened the ceremony reflecting on the purpose of the NOC. The audience joined in with reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and the Optimist Creed.

“The Optimist Club has many activities throughout the year,” Morrow said.

In January, members assisted the Boys Scout program with a pinewood derby car workshop.

In March, the NOC assists with the Tri-Star Basketball competition at the Neillsville School with the help of Judy Lindner. The Ruby Meihack Easter Egg hunt is in April.

“[Meihack] was a longtime member and a very dedicated person,” said Morrow, “so we do this in her memory every year.”

Morrow pointed out May is Respect for Law month, honoring folks in the community for outstanding service to youth and the community.

“May is Childhood Cancer month,” Morrow said. “We try to help a family with a child with care in our community.”

And December is the annual Christmas party, which is on Sunday, Dec. 3, at 1 p.m. at the CART Center with Jake Jalapeno, author of the “Silly Food Book, performing.”

“Tonight is one of those times that’s really special because we have quite a few [nominees], but boy, every single one of them deserves it,” said Morrow. “You young people are fantastic; this is such a fun thing to do every year.”

Morrow proceeded to call each recipient and shared with the audience his/her accomplishments followed by presenting each with a plaque and a gift certificate.

First up was Paige Voigt. Voigt has worked at the Neillsville Retirement Center (NRC) since July and was nominated for being “very caring and compassionate.” She often plans and does activities with the residents. If she sees a resident having a bad day, she tries to help them feel better by trying to make them smile, laugh and remember why they are loved.

Lily Opelt also works at the NRC. She is “compassionate, caring” and cooks at the facility when asked. Opelt also works at the Riviera Supper Club, arrives to work on time and does what is asked of her. She gets along with her coworkers and customers. She goes above and beyond as a high school student and working two jobs.

Micah Zoschke is described as having a “strong work ethic, a passion for success and a kind personality.” He dedicates many hours to the Neillsville Recreation Department, volunteering for coaching youth flag football, youth soccer, Learn 2 Skate and umpiring for youth baseball. While at school, he is part of the National Honor Society and Teen Leadership Council, as well as multiple sports. Zoschke has been an “inspiration and role model for many.”

Bryce Erickson has been volunteering for the recreation department for four years. He has a “passion for working with kids” and has refereed basketball tournaments, coached flag football and umpired youth baseball. In school, Erickson has been a three-sport athlete United Church of Christ Youth Group.

Jackson Hemp is known for his love of Christmas. He helps set up and decorate many themed trees as well as his own Christmas Village collection. With his love for singing and dancing, he is a member of Neillsville Area Players, middle school choir and high school show choir. Jackson also works at Sniteman Pharmacy and Wildcat Supper Club while keeping time for schoolwork, student council, class secretary and Kindness Club.

Jada Gurney is “very reliable” and has been volunteering and working for the Neillsville Recreation Department with youth soccer, softball, basketball and the swimming pool. She is a member of the Neillsville High School Choir, National Honor Society and Spanish Club, and also serves as a tutor. Gurney is currently working on her certified nursing assistant (CNA) certification.

Braylon Boyer is another volunteer with the recreation department, helping with 3-on-3 basketball and youth basketball tournaments and as a flag football coach. He “shows compassion, leadership” and shares his love for the game. Boyer is a three-sport athlete and an asset to his teammates. He also volunteers with his church group and community events.

Ethan Miller has been employed at the Sav-Rite Building Center for the past two years and shows exceptional skills. He “demonstrates a strong work ethic and leadership skills and goes above and beyond.” He takes on many tasks and shows great customer service. Miller has a “great heart and is honest and trustworthy.”

Finally, Abby Koepp has been involved in many school and community activities over the years, including her church’s music program and Teen Leadership Council. She volunteered with reffing and score-keeping for basketball games and tournaments. Koepp has achieved her academic letter and has played basketball and softball. She participated in the Chippewa Valley Youth Apprenticeship Program and is currently enrolled in the High School CNA Academy. She has remained motivated to keep on course with her academics despite her diagnosis and treatment for leukemia, with the encouragement and support of this community.

“I’d like to say, as a community member, this family of faith and hard work in getting [Koepp’s] health has kept this community so together,” Morrow said. “I mean, how many black shirts with orange ribbons did we see? We really need to congratulate the whole family.

“We had an awesome evening with awesome kids. Thank you so much for showing up and being here to appreciate them.”

Peterson Represents Unity in Whitewater Concert (2023)

Mitchell Peterson, of Unity, participated in the UW-Whitewater’s Gala Holiday Concert, Dec. 2 with the Chamber Singers choir. Edward DuBois/Clark County Press

UW-Whitewater held an annual concert, the Gala Holiday Concert, Dec. 2.

The concert showcased the most of the music department’s students and is the biggest annual benefit event for the university. Funds raised are turned into scholarships for the department’s students.

Mitchell Peterson of Unity, a Colby High School graduate and UW-Whitewater sophomore, is one of the singers in the music department and participated in the concert.

Peterson is a member of the Chamber Singers, directed by Robert Gehrenbeck, a music professor at the college.

Peterson sang tenor in the concert, but he also sings baritone. Outside of the choir, Peterson plays trombone for the university’s bands.

The Chamber Singers played in the second half of the program, after intermission.

The Chamber Singers paired with the Percussion Ensemble to sing “Laylat al-Milad Mansour Labaky’s (Christmas Changes Things),” arranged by Nareg Abajian, and Stacy Garrop, Parker Rundquist and Jack Pfeiffer’s “Lo Yisa Goy (Nation Shall Not List Sword Against Nation).”

After the Whitewater Symphony Orchestra played, it grouped with the Chamber Singers and the concert choir, under the direction of Christopher Ramaekers, associate professor of music, to sing Peter Bloesch’s “Sweet Baby, Sleep,” Anon’s “On this Day, Earth Shall Ring” and Lowell Mason/Isaac Watts’ “Joy to the World” (as the finale piece), both arranged by Bloesch.

Peterson had played band in high school, and is in his first year with the Chamber Singers. He had auditioned for the varsity choir in his freshman year, but lost out to another student.

Peterson is studying for a bachelor’s degree in musical education, and intends to stay on the choir and in the bands through the rest of the program.

Peterson would like to teach locally after completing and receiving his degree, at the middle school level.

Peterson said the biggest differences between the high school and university choirs are the increased amounts of practice, with a lot more work and dedication.

He also commented on the reliance on self-accountability.

Peterson looks forward to all the Chamber Singers events and the studio’s spring recital.

Small Town Shoppers-Support Small Business Saturday (2023)

By June Thompson

After all the Black Friday sales gained shoppers’ attention, there was Small Business Saturday. This year, Small Business Saturday was Nov. 25. Neillsville folks were out shopping at small businesses in downtown and saying what they believe is important about Small Business Saturday.

Diane and Kevin Harris, owner of For Craft Sakes craft store in downtown Neillsville, appreciated the “friendliness of the customers and the great vendors.”

“It’s been good.” said Diane Harris.

Barb Shoemaker was browsing through For Craft Sakes looking for gifts.

“Small businesses are intrinsically part of what keeps a small town alive. I do believe that,”
Shoemaker said.

Mama’s G’s Consignment Store offered discounted merchandise.

“One of the biggest things about Small Business Saturday are the connections between business owners and customers,” said Amy Gerhardt.

Gerhardt owns Mama G’s and knows her customers by name.

Love + Flour Bakery is a family business in downtown Neillsville.

Jenna Sigurdson, co-owner of Love + Flour Bakery in downtown Neillsville, was busy with family and customers during Small Business Saturday, Nov. 25, an event across Clark County made to promote people supporting their local businesses.

“It’s been extremely busy,” said Jenna Sigurdson. “We’re very blessed. We can have the kids here with us.”

She and her husband, Erik, made a lot of pies for Thanksgiving, about 150.

“We get a lot of support from the community,” Jenna Sigurdson said.

Small businesses rely on community support to survive. They try to meet the needs of their customers by offering products and great service.

Kristine Boon, owner of Christie Country Quilts, greeted customers.

“I love shining a light on small businesses especially in a small town,” Boon said. “You know your customers/patrons. All small businesses in town cheer for each other—that makes a huge difference. Support from the community allows us to support community fundraisers. It’s been great.”

Visitors also came to Neillsville from other communities. Kari Hawley of Muskego and Melody Hawley of Neillsville stopped by Christie Country Quilts.

“You don’t realize the local talent unless you come out and see it,” said Melody Hawley.

“We support local businesses,” Kari Hawley said.
