Greenwood students who were granted degrees at the 81st annual commencement
exercises of the University of Wisconsin, Monday, June 18th, 1934, were: Harry
A. Speich, Bachelor of Law, and Avis I. McIntyre, Bachelor of Arts.
More than 1,500 bachelor's and higher degrees were conferred at the exercises in
the presence of thousands of parents and relatives of the graduates. The degrees
were presented by Dr. Glenn Frank, president of the institution.
Besides the academic degrees granted, six leaders in the fields of education,
engineering, music and public affairs were given honorary degrees.
They included: Karl Young, Professor of English at Yale University; Karl T.
Compton, president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Robert B.
Goodman, Marinette, Wis., Director of the Sub-science Homestead Division of the
U.S. Department of Interior; John Alden Carpenter, distinguished American
Composer of Chicago; John L. Savager, Wisconsin graduate and now chief designing
engineer of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation at Denver, Colo., and Albert R. Mann,
Provost of Cornell University.
