In January of 1961, he went to Korea for 18 months and was honorably discharged in 1963. He returned home and began working for Wausau Employers Insurance where he met Arlene Bush. He was a history buff, and enjoyed researching and documenting his own family heritage. He loved "old time" music, and delighted in every opportunity to play the drums with fellow musicians. Additional hobbies included model railroading and coin collecting.
