Kuester, Mr. and Mrs. Norbert (Golden - 7 June 1973)

Friends and relatives gathered at the American Legion Hall, Greenwood, Sunday, in honor of the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Kuester, rural Greenwood.

The former Lena Abel is the daughter of the late John and Clara (Decker) Abel. Before her marriage she was a cook in the Christie Hotel, which stood on the site of the Pines service station in Greenwood. The hotel burned several years later.

On June 7, 1923 she was married to Norbert Kuester of the Town of Warner. His parents were Gottlieb and Wilhelmina (Reinke) Kuester. The wedding took place at her parental home in the Town of Eaton with the Rev. Otto J. Vriesen.

The attendants were Gilbert Abel, now deceased and Loretta Schneider now Mrs. Heidelbach of Milwaukee. She attended the celebration.

They set up housekeeping as the third generation on his parental farm where they have lived the past fifty years. The house was built 75 years ago when Norbert Kuester was a baby.

They are active members of the Immanuel United Church of Christ, originally the West Side German Reformed Church. He served as a consistory elder for four years and she had been a member of the ladies aid for forty years.

They have two daughters, Mrs. Calvin (Gladys) Awe, Owen, and Mrs. Eldore (Violet) Humke, Greenwood. There are six grandchildren. The daughters provided flowers for their parents and the immediate family members.

Through the years the couple has traveled by automobile to both the east and west coast. In more recent years their travels have been to the ‘best fishing spots.’ He is also an avid hunter.

In summer he tends the large lawn and she takes care of the flowers. In winter she does crocheting of rugs and makes quilts and spreads.

The couple received many cards and gifts from their many guests.
