Washburn (29 March 1973)

The community as well as everyone who knew them was greatly shocked, over the drastic deaths of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Kosmosky.

A large crowd attended the Kosmosky’s funeral Wednesday morning at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Most of the ladies in the neighborhood assisted some of the church ladies with the lunch following the funeral and burial.

Mrs. Elmer Kapfer entertained the Washburn Homemakers club March 14, with 10 members and one visitor in attendance. Mrs. Dick Tibbett, Neillsville center chairman, was the visitor. She brought the county scrapbooks for the members to see. The members responded to roll call with, “what educational activities should we emphasize in our club?” Mrs. Regina Prewitt gave the project, “Your Money or Your Blood,” and gave a report on the need of blood and emergency relief for tornado, floods and all emergencies. The Homemakers are taking care of the Red Cross Drive this year, as Clark County is in grave danger of losing our county blood bank if we don’t reach our quota. We haven’t reached our quota the past 10 years, Mrs. Tibbett explained. If we lose the blood bank, and if we are in need of blood, it will cost us from $20 to $75 per pint for blood, besides the fee for giving it to us. So Let’s reach our quota for the county this year.

Mrs. Harry Teter had the misfortune to fall down some back steps from their kitchen into the garage a few weeks ago and injured her back. She was taken to Memorial Hospital and had x-rays, etc. The only remedy for her injury was bed rest, so she decided to go home and stay in bed. She is improving at his writing.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Short were guests recently of Mrs. Harold Elmendorf in honor of Mrs. Short’s 75th birthday, which was March 9.

Bible Study will be held at the Albert Lincoln home Saturday night.

The heavy rains of March 10 caused our creeks, the Cunningham and Hay Meddaugh, to raise high. The Hay Meddaugh on the Kingsbury road (better known as the Bender Road) had to be closed for a day or two as the culverts couldn’t take care of the water and it ran across the road. Many basements were flooded, including Ralph Short’s when water backed up in their cellar drains from the creek. High water in the creek is unusual at this time of year, as it usually comes in, May or June when we have very hard rains, causing, near floods and high water.
