Felser, Candy – Little Miss Neillsville (1985)
Smiling Happily are the newly crowned royalty of the 3rd annual Little Miss
Neillsville pageant, held Friday evening, May 31, in conjunction with the city
Dairy Fest celebration. Candy Felser, 9, daughter of Joe and Margie Felser was
chosen Little Miss Neillsville 1985. Selected as princesses were Katie Hagedorn,
7, daughter of Bruce and Beth Hagedorn, and Tina Mortenson, 7, daughter of Bob
and Kathy Mortenson. Participating in the pageant this year were twenty-three
girls ages seven to nine.

Kunze, Brian (Graduate - 1985)
Brian Kunze, of Neillsville, graduated recently in 1985 commencement exercises
at the Rice Lake Campus of the Indianhead Technical Institute. Brian was a
graduate of the telephone service-repair program and was among 258 graduates who
received diplomas or associate degrees in graduation exercises.

Air Force Captain Jo Ann I. Seymour, daughter of retired Lt. Col. Charles D. and
G. Joan Seymour of 5G Lake Loraine, Shalimar, Florida, has arrived for duty in
Greece. Seymour, a clinical nurse with the U.S. Air Force Hospital, was
previously assigned at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona. Her husband, John,
is the son of John G. and Carol a. Zimmer of Rt. 3, Greenwood. The captain is a
1977 graduate of the University of Vermont, Burlington.

Swenson, Cal (Retires - 1985)
The next time Cal Swenson sorts through a stack of mail, it will be his own. The
rural Neillsville man retired this past Friday after 37 years with the Postal
Service. He started working for the post office the day after his high school
graduation in 1944 and has been there since then for all but four years. He
started out as a carrier and has filled just about every other position since
then. He finished his career as supervisor of operations at the Neillsville Post
Office.

Viterbo College recently announced the scholarship recipients for the 1985-86
academic year. Viterbo College is a private, nonprofit, 4-year institution of
higher learning located in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Area recipients are Tina

Greenwood High School Class (1985)
The 1985 Class of Greenwood Community High School will be graduating at 1:30
p.m., Sunday, May 26, in the West Gym of the high school. Class speakers are
Ellen M. Richmond, valedictorian; Timothy J. Scherer, salutatorian; and Jay
Graski, class president.
The class has selected the purple tipped white rose for their class flower. The
class song is “We’ve Only Just Begun” with the words of the class motto being
“To Achieve All That Is Possible, ‘We Must Attempt the Impossible.’”

Revolution award, choral award, editor of the yearbook, presidential award,
business skills, pep club and the Masonic Lodge Scholarship.
Timothy J. Scherer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Scherer, is the salutatorian of
the 1985 Greenwood Class. Among his awards were for the yearbook, presidential
award, business skills and president of the National Honor Society.

Greenwood High School – Talentships (1985)
Two Greenwood students have accepted talentships at the University of Wisconsin
Center, Marshfield-Wood County for next year.
The talentships, valued at $400 each, are awarded each year by the University
Foundation, based on the selection of recipients by the Scholarship Committee.
The awards are based on merit, not financial need, and are granted to qualified
applicants showing academic achievement, leadership and participation in high
school activities.
Kris Gardner, Greenwood High School, plans to major in marketing. She was a
member of the National Honor Society and served as president and vice president
of Future Homemakers of America, treasurer of Future Business Leaders of
America, secretary of Pep Club, Treasurer of the junior class and president of
the sophomore class.
She was leading conference scorer in basketball. In volleyball she was
All-Conference and received the MVP award. Gardner was also captain of the
cheerleading squad for football.
Delmond Horn, Greenwood High School, plans to major in business administration.
He was president of Student Council and Future Farmers of America, a member of
National Honor Society and Future Business Leaders of America and was co-editor
of the school newspaper.

Neillsville High School FFA (Awards - 1985)
The annual Neillsville FFA Parents Night Banquet was held on May 7, and many
awards were distributed. Terry Byrne received the State Farmer Degree, highest
handed out by the state association.
Students receiving Greenhand awards were Leann Wiseman, Ethel Wesenberg, Bryan
Wegner, Roger King, Milton Schmidt, Karen Krause, Jamie Kuhn, Becky Kyle, Sue
Oldham, Jim Ingold, Glen Lewis, Shelly Hubing, Paul Hubing, Tammy Heck, Scott
Bryant, Chris Harder, Marilyn Cram, Wayne Elmhorst, Jim Hayes. These people had
to take an oral test from an officer and have $50.00 actively invested in a farm
project.
Chapter farmers degrees were presented to Jay Ehlers, Randy Meyer, Dean Bredlau,
Gary Thoma, Ross Roehl, Kent Durham, Bill Buettner, Ed Kingsbury, Mark Schmidt,
Mike Elmhorst. These people have already received the Greenhand for one year and
have $100.00 actively invested.
Master Tester awards were given to those students who completed at least one
year of milk testing and got a 70 percent or better on a written examination.
Students were Mike Elmhorst, Monte Hoppa, Keith Loberg, Randy Meyer, Mark
Schmidt, Jim Hayes, Chris Harder, Shelly Hubing, Scott Bryant, Karen Krause, Tim
Heck, Jamie Kuhn.
Foundation Awards were given to students for work in these areas, Kale Kaslow-ag
elect.; Jim Schmitt-ag. mechanics; Todd Nemitz-placement in sales & service; Ray
Pagenkopf-soil & water management; Keith Loberg-ornamental horticulture; Glen
Lewis-crop production; Ed Kingsbury-outdoor recreation; Greg Wohlfeil-beef
production; Dean Bredlau-swine production; Karen Krause-public speaking; Ethel
Wesenberg-horse proficiency; Kevin Anason-chapter scholarship; Dean
Wetzel-chapter leadership; Randy Meyer-dairy production; Ross Roehl-sheep
production; Gary Thoma-home improvement.
Individual awards were given to people who have made the highest achievements in
FFA. For the first year achievements, Karen Krause received the Star Greenhand
award; Leann Wiseman received the Fritz Buchholz trophy, better known as the
Outstanding Freshman Trophy, for highest achievement her freshman year. Star
Chapter Farmer was presented to Randy Meyer for the chapter farmer with most
points accumulated.
Bars or letter were presented to those members who went to Madison or River
Falls or showed at the fair or any other FFA activity. Members were Karen
Krause, Leann Wiseman, Roger King, Wayne Elmhorst, Glen Lewis, Scott Bryant,
Becky Kyle, Ed Kingsbury, Ethel Wesenberg, Dale Kalsow, Tammy Heck, Dean
Bredlau, Jay Ehlers, Don Crothers, Will Dux, Dorry Durham, Kevin Anason, Richard
Kuechenmeister, Harold Heck, Jim Bredlau, Randy Meyer, Keith Loberg, Ray
Pagenkopf, Gary Thoma, Greg Wohlfeil.
AV Director, Al Hoesly was given an honorary Chapter Farm Degree because of his
outstanding service and advice to the agricultural education program. It is the
highest award given by the local chapter.
High Salesman trophies were given out for citrus fruit, garden seeds and seed
corn sales. Receiving trophies for fruit sales in the fall were Jeff Schultz in
first and Ross Roehl, in second place. For the spring sale, first place went to
Ed Kingsbury and second place to Ethel Wesenberg. In calendar sales, Philip
Schmidt was first and second place to Ethel Wesenberg. Gary Thoma was first in
seed corn. In garden seeds, Philip Schmidt was first and Ethel Wesenberg,
second.
