------ Colby Infant Dies in Cottage Mishap Sun. (25 SEP 1966)
Randy Maki, 18 month old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Maki, died Sunday, Sept. 25,
of apparent asphyxiation by fumes from a stove in a cottage near Tripoli. The
child’s mother, Mrs. Crystal Maki, 18, Colby, and a friend Miss Diane Smazal,
19, rural Abbotsford, are listed in critical condition in a Park Falls hospital
as a result of the same accident.
Mrs. Maki and her son and Miss Smazal had spent the week end in the cottage.
They were found unconscious Monday Morning by a neighbor, who rushed the child
to a nearby motel and summoned medical help. The child was pronounced dead
shortly afterward.
Mrs. Maki and Miss Smazal were taken to a Park Falls hospital.
The mishap is believed to have been caused by a faulty flue on a stove used to
heat the cottage.
Mrs. Maki had been living in Colby. Mr. Maki, the child’s father, is a resident
of Belvidere, Ill.
